The Open Education Librarian advocates for open education as a high-impact student success practice and develops strategic initiatives to expand course material affordability on campus. As part of the Outreach & Open Education team, they also seek opportunities to partner with campus stakeholders to strengthen the Libraries’ integration into campuswide student success efforts.
Essential Functions
Open Education
- Champions open education, course material affordability, and their impact on student success and teaching excellence.
- Develops strategic initiatives to embed open practices into the curriculum and increase adoption or creation of affordable course materials.
- Builds community and capacity around open education through the design of workshops, learning cohorts, and self-paced modules.
- Assists UTA faculty, staff, students, and colleagues with questions about copyright, fair use, and open licensing.
- Supports and promotes the work of the other teams in the RIO department to advance strategic student success initiatives.
Outreach and Engagement
- Cultivates partnerships with faculty, staff, and administration to integrate the Libraries’ programming and resources into the University’s student success initiatives.
- Utilizes data from various sources to strategize outreach efforts and identify opportunities for high-impact partnerships.
- Contributes to communications about department activities through the libraries’ websites, LibGuides, and other platforms.
College Liaison Team Role
- Collaborates with other College Liaison Librarians as defined in the College LiaisonProgram document.
- Develops and maintains subject specialization and teaching expertise to provide instructional and consultation support to assigned college(s).
- Assesses need for and create¿sustainable digital learning objects.
- Conducts strategic outreach including attending faculty meetings and distributing library communications.
- Contributes to the timely collection of data for program and organizational assessment.
Professional Development
- Contributes to the fields of librarianship and higher education and their own professional development through service, research, presenting, and publishing
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution and knowledge of current trends in open education, open pedagogy, open publishing, and other open practices in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with developing outreach initiatives for open education, supporting an open publishing program, and/or related coursework.
- Experience with using open-source publishing tools and learning technologies, such as H5P, Canvas, or Pressbooks.
- Experience with student success initiatives, curriculum design, information literacy instruction, or other student-centered programming.
- Knowledge of best practices in developing innovative outreach and engagement programs in academic libraries.
- Experience creating accessible learning objects in a variety of formats and modalities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to engage in advanced project planning and management skills, involving designing, leading, and completing a project within its intended scope and timeline.
- Knowledge of U.S. copyright law as it relates to education and ability to provide guidance on public/open licensing options.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with people of different backgrounds in a team-based environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to analyze situations and make sound decisions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive/SharePoint, and other common office software.
