The Library at Utah Tech University in St. George, Utah, invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Librarian faculty position, responsible for collaborating with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty in the various disciplines in the College of Health Sciences to promote student learning and success. The position will support research and teaching, primarily in the health sciences, and collaborate with campus and community partners to promote emerging technologies, trends, and career competencies. The Research and Instruction Librarian for Health Sciences develops relevant collections, observing best practices and discipline-specific needs. The librarian in this position keeps pace with changes and trends in library instruction, including information literacy and AI literacy frameworks. This position provides library leadership and develops library services to serve a diverse population of students. The Research and Instruction Librarian for Health Sciences will contribute to discussions and provide input and serve on various library and university committees and teams. Library faculty are members of the academic community with responsibilities in the areas of librarianship, student learning and success, service, scholarship, and creative activity.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of health science disciplines and health science librarianship/health information professionals.  
  • Develop, evaluate, and assess electronic and print collections to effectively support accreditation, the health sciences curriculum, and scholarly success of health sciences students and faculty. 
  • Provide outreach and conduct class visits to the College of Health Sciences.
  • Design and provide information literacy and AI literacy instruction to the College of Health Sciences, and possibly in other interdisciplinary areas as needed.
  • Collaborate with faculty to create relevant outcomes-based learning resources and instruction to integrate information and digital literacy into the health sciences curricula. 
  • Provide general and subject specific reference services through in-person and virtual on-call and scheduled research consultations, possibly including some evenings and weekends.
  • Develop a focused program of high-quality research and creative accomplishments, consistent with professional responsibilities and the Library's mission and goals.
  • Actively participate and demonstrate leadership in professional responsibilities that serve the Library, the University, the profession, and the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required (minimum qualifications):

  • Master’s degree in Library Sciences or Information Science (or equivalent) from an institution accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Experience or knowledge of teaching research methods, information literacy, bibliographic and library instruction sessions to students and other patrons in one-on-one, classroom, and/or distance mediated instructional settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with library colleagues, students, faculty, staff, other libraries, other agencies, and the public.
  • Strong technology skills and experience with a variety of online databases and resources.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Preferred:
  • One (1) or more years of professional experience related to the health sciences.
  • Familiarity with medical vocabulary and the research processes and emerging trends in the health sciences.
  • Familiarity with CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, and other health sciences information resources.
  • Familiarity or interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) related to library instruction and trends in the health sciences, Open Science, and data management.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in physical, life, health, or related science.
  • Commitment to and demonstrable experience promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  • Experience working with library users of diverse ages, as well as from various socioeconomic, cultural and academic backgrounds. 
  • Experience or familiarity with learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, etc.) and open educational resources (OER)
