The State University of New York (SUNY) College at Canton invites qualified applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track, faculty position in the Library Department, beginning January 30, 2026.
The Library Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Southworth Library within the broader Learning Commons model at SUNY Canton. Reporting to the Executive Director for the Learning Commons, the Library Director will advance student success and support scholarship. The director will supervise three (3) librarian faculty members and foster a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative environment. The director will remain active in librarianship with a strong role in leading open education resources (OER) initiatives. The ideal candidate will balance daily operations with long-term vision.
The library at SUNY Canton is part of the learning commons, which includes academic tutoring, academic recovery, and information services. Reporting to the executive director for the learning commons, the library director will provide leadership for library services as well as work collaboratively with other directors and leaders in the building to contribute to the student-access based mission of the learning commons. Key responsibilities include:
Leadership & Strategic Vision
- Provide direction for library services, collections, and teaching, and student experiences
- Collaborate with other leaders in the building and the executive director to align the library with institutional goals and priorities
- Advocate for the role of the library in supporting undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, learning, and scholarship
- Engage in annual assessment of library services and implement long-term strategies for the growth and innovation of library services
Administration & Supervision
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate three professional librarian faculty, fostering professional growth, contribution, and collaboration
- Manage budgets, grants, resources, and library operations
- Represent the library in campus committees, partnerships, and Learning Commons' initiatives
- Develop and maintain library processes, workflows, and operating procedures
Campus Engagement
- Partner with faculty to integrate information literacy, research support, and scholarly resources into the curriculum
- Lead OER and affordable learning initiatives
- Support student learning through accessible, inclusive services and spaces that foster academic success
- Act as co-chair with the director for Tutoring Services for the learning commons student advisory committee and as a standing member of the learning commons building leaders group
- Participate in governance, serve on committees, and connect to SUNY-wide library initiatives, committees, and groups
Professional Practice and Innovation
- Remain active in librarianship through teaching, scholarship, or professional service
- Stay current on trends in academic libraries, OER, and scholarship
- Guide the adoption of emerging technologies and innovative practices to enhance access, discovery, and research support
Assessment & Continuous Improvement
- Collect and analyze data to inform decision-making and service improvements
- Assess the effectiveness of library services, spaces, and collections in advancing student success and academic excellence
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives that support institutional goals and accreditation requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Masters in Library Science or a Master's in Library and Information Science (ALA-accredited or equivalent).
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in academic libraries, including supervisory and leadership roles.
- Commitment to inclusive, accessible, and student-centered library services.
- Experience supporting students and faculty research, with a desire to expand this capacity.
- Familiarity with learning commons models and the integration of library services.
- Knowledge of Open Education Resources (OER) and affordable learning initiatives.
- Experience with budget and grant development and management.
- Understanding of assessment practices and strategic planning.
- Record of professional engagement and development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in teaching and instructional design for information literacy.
- Knowledge of scholarly communication, publishing, and digital scholarship.
- Experience with collection development and maintenance, including databases and resources for online students.
- Vision for leveraging emerging technology, including the ethical application and use of artificial intelligence.
- Experience working with diverse student populations in both physical and virtual settings.
- Experience in aligning library services and resources to strengthen retention.
