The Open Publishing Specialist supports the publication of open educational resources (OER) and other open materials using multiple publishing platforms, including Pressbooks and Manifold. This may include managing open publishing workflows, typesetting and layout of OER publications, reviewing content for accessibility compliance, and providing support and training for authors. This position will report to the Affordable Course Content Librarian.

Responsibilities
  • Work with OER authors to develop cover design and other graphics as needed
  • Ensure that new created OER meet accessibility requirements
  • Review drafts and flag issues for authors (e.g. alt text for images)
  • Create transcripts for audio materials
  • Check document structure and formatting for screen readability
  • Republish existing OER in different formats, bringing in line with accessibility requirements
  • Guide authors in correctly citing images and other materials incorporated into OER
  • Help authors implement a peer review process for their works
  • Train authors and provide support on using Pressbooks, Manifold, and other OER platforms
  • Update and publish existing works as OER
  • Consult with potential OER authors on publishing platform options
  • Assist with other digital publishing and scholarly communication workflows as needed

Required qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
 
Preferred qualifications
  • Familiarity with Pressbooks, Manifold, Digital Commons, and/or other digital publishing platforms
  • Knowledge of copyright and/or Creative Commons licensing
  • Experience with or interest in open educational resources
  • Knowledge of CSS and/or HTML
  • Graphic design training and/or experience
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility
